Charles DICKENS1812-1870Charles Dickens was born in Portsmouth, England, on February 7, 1812. Dickens went to vvork at a blacking vvarehouse, when he was tvvelve. He had iittle formal schooling, he was able to teach himself shorthand and launch a career as a journalist. His connections to various magazines and nevvspapers as a political journalist gave him the opportunity to begin publishing his own fiction at the beginning of his career. VVhile he published several sketches in magazines, it was not until he serialized The Pickvvick Papers över 1836-37 that he experienced true success. Oliver Twist and Nicholas Nickleby followed in monthly installments. İn 1843, Dickens published one of his most famous works, A Christmas Carol.His vvritings became longer and more serious. İn David Copperfield (1849-50), readers find the same flawed vvorld that Dickens discovered as a young boy. Dickens published some of his best-known in his own vveekly periodicals. On June 9, 1870, Charles Dickens died. Among English vvriters, in terms of fame and recognition of characters and stories, he is second only to Shakespeare.
