The focus of this study is the compulsory exchange of populations betvveen Greece and Turkey that took place during the period from 1922 and 1925. The study examines the impact of these events on the social and economic life of the city of Adana, it compares the economic and social conditions in the city before and after the population exchange. in order to place these events within their proper historical context, the study starts with Adana in 1832 under the rule of ibrahim Pasha, whose reign brought substantial changes to the citys economic activities and social structure. With the withdrawal of ibrahim Pasha from Adana in 1840, further government projects and foreign investments helped Adana to transform itself from a relatively small town to a commercial urbanized area of some regional signifıcance. The implementation of the 1922-1925 population exchange in the area also dramatically affected the economic and social transformation of Adana. The remainder of the study examines this process of reshaping the economic and social structure of Adana during the fırst four years of the Turkish Republic, focusing, among »«hers, on the repercussions of the compulsory population transfer on the Turkish public and examining the attitudes and approaches toward the population transfer in the Turkish media and Grand National Assembly.
